My recent posts were about whisky, bourbon and gin. As is known, all these ones aren’t native to Russia. So now I’m about to revert to ingredients which are widespread and favorite in Russia. I’m talking about vodka and apple juice.

Not long ago I’ve been given three bottles of homemade apple juice. It was pressed, then sterilized and bottled immediately without adding sugar. It was in autumn, and now after six months in dark cellar the juice became clear.

Tasted, it has no differences with freshly pressed apple juice and seems slightly more concentrated.

Old Virginia Kentucky Straight Bourbon

For a long time I was going to tell about a couple of premium bourbons I love very much. But it turned out otherwise, and now I write about one little known bourbon which is always within easy reach of my hand. It’s called Old Virginia Kentucky Straight Bourbon, and I’m used to choosing it when I make cocktails with bourbon.

I can’t find enough information concerning this whiskey. It’s known that Old Virginia brand is owned by French company Le Martiniquaise which also owns several little known whisky, vodka and gin brands. It seems like these ones as well as Old Virginia Bourbon are distributed mainly in France.

In Russia these brands are available through French retailer Auchan. And Auchan hypermarket was the place where I’ve bought a bottle of Old Virginia Kentucky Straight Bourbon aged for six years.

Penicillin

As I previously said, I love whisky very much. I prefer it to all other alcohols when I want something to drink straight.

Also I’m keen on modern cocktail recipes with whisky – blended as well as single malt. Sometimes they look very complex and require expensive or handmade ingredients but it just increases my desire to make them.

Lately I take my time to look for new recipes with whisky, and Penicillin by Sam Ross became the first one I was interested in.

The Dreamy Dorini Smokin’ Martini

As you know, Martini Cocktail is very popular one and has lots and lots of varieties which often have nothing in common with classic Martini.

As a conservative person, I love traditional approach and always make old good Dry Martini including Vodka Martini, one of my favourite nightcaps.

Smoky Martini is the creation of dazzling «Libation Goddes» Audrey Saunders. The recipe looks very nice, audacious and austere at the same time. It was luring me, and once I’ve gave in to it.

When reading «Thinking Bartender Barbook» by George Sinclair, I’ve saw there this recipe with gorgeous title «The Dreamy Dorini Smokin’ Martini» and decided to make t immediately.

Leap Frog Highball

This post is inspired by the discussion about limited possibilities to buy original ginger ale in Russia and Ukraine.

I just walked to supermarket positioned itself as an elite food and drinks shop and bought there a bottle of Schweppes Canada Dry Ginger Ale, the only original ginger ale brand I ever see in Moscow.

I wanted to make a simple long drink with ginger ale, and Moscow Mule was the first recipe came into my mind. But later I read some articles and I didn’t like that I found out about this drink. Then I just browsed CocktailDB and found a simple and nice cocktail similar to Tom Collins. It’s called Leap Frog Highball.

MxMo XLVIII: Pain in the Ass – The Bunny Hug

This is my debut in MixMo events, and I’m happy to know that this one is the fourth anniversary Mixology Monday event.

The theme is not pleasant as I would like it to be but I instantly thought of one drink which make me very disappointed. It’s called The Bunny Hug, and I’ve knew about it in Slakethirst blog.

Funny coincidence: I was inspired by the Slakethirst post which was for the very first Mixology Monday event dedicated to pastis.

Lemon Drop

Lemon Drop (or Lemon Drop Martini) is very popular drink. Google gave me links to millions of pages referred to this recipe.

My choice is the CocktailDB recipe, nice drink without vermouth, triple sec or bitters. I’m not an expert in mixology history but CocktailDB tells me that this Lemon Drop is taken from “The Joy of Mixology” by Gary Regan; New York: Clarkson Potter; 2003.

This is the second reason why I wanted to make Lemon Drop. The first one is my new citrus tinctures as well as my intention to use it in some recipes.

Bowmore Legend Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Bowmore Distillery is one of few distilleries located at the isle of Islay, a region famous for heavy peated and smoky whiskies produced there.

Internet sources tell that Bowmore whiskies aren’t heaviest ones but well-balanced in taste and aroma. Peat is definitely there but smokiness is less featured.

I’m interesting in Islay whiskies very much, so one day I was very happy to buy a bottle of Bowmore Legend Single Malt Scotch Whisky. It was very cheap, and at first I was concerned about its quality. But all my fears gone when I opened the bottle and smelt aroma.

Bowmore Legend is defined as NAS (No Age Stated) but some sources insist that it’s aged for eight years.

The Detox

It upset me to learn of vodka underestimated by cocktail enthusiasts. Not because I’m Russian (well, it just helps me to know more about vodka). I saw many vodka lovers and vodka haters, and I’m sure none of them knows exactly what vodka is.

I feel vodka is a tradition in Russia just like whisky in Scotland, beer in Czech or Germany, green tea in China.

Yes, good vodka should have neutral flavour, and that’s why many people prefer not to use it in cocktails. But do you know how frequently shortcomings turn to advantages? Often, very often.

So all this story is about my intention to promote vodka as superb cocktail ingredient. And first my attempt is the cocktail called The Detox. This beautiful drink has been presented by Paystyle at Umamimart (he-he, this is another valuable result of my lurking)

D’Artagnan’s Wish

As I wrote earlier, I love to spend my time lurking on cocktail blogs and sipping a nice drink. One day I was reading Kaiser Penguin blog, one of my favourite blogs, thanks and respect to Rick , the author (Sorry if I’m wrong…).

There is a nice recipe called “D’Artagnan’s Wish”.

I’ve red it carefully and said – “Wow! I have all ingredients for it, and it looks very-very-very interesting. I should make it immediately!” Then I went and made it.

After first sip my reaction was “Oh dear Lord! Man, bookmark this page quickly! No, no, don’t bookmark, just save it as PDF!!!”

It was a great experience, a moment of pleasure. And I later I felt that I have to write about it.

The essence of this cocktail is a combination of very different flavours of Demerara rum and heavy peated and smoked Islay single malt whisky. They look like different but their combination set me thinking about their similarity.
